TABULA · Amiral

Amiral: Sea Battle A calm sea battle for two: with friends, real players or a bot.

Amiral is a calm sea battle for two, played on a night sea. Lay out your fleet, pick a square on your opponent’s sea and fire. It is our own take on the old pencil-and-paper game.

  • 2 players · 9×9 or 10×10
  • One battle, best of 3 or 5
  • Free, no real money
Amiral: the moon and a lighthouse over the night sea, and a 9×9 board with misses, a hit and a sunk ship

A sea battle, at your own pace

Two players, two hidden fleets, one square at a time. You place your ships on your own sea, then you take turns calling squares on the other sea until one fleet is gone. It is the pencil-and-paper game many of us played at school, in our own version with its own boards and fleets.

The screens are a quiet night sea with a moon and a lighthouse, and on every screen the light falls on one thing only. You play with one hand, in portrait, and running out of time costs you nothing: a shot is fired for you, with no penalty.

  • Two boards

The 9×9 Kahvehane board with 7 ships, and at a friend’s table the 10×10 Classic board with 10 ships.

  • Ships never touch

Not even at a corner. A sunk ship always has open water around it, and the game marks it for you.

  • A hit fires again

Hit a ship and you shoot again. A miss passes the turn to your opponent.

  • One battle or a match

Play one battle, best of 3 or best of 5. A rematch is one tap away.

How to play

The rules fit on a napkin. Your first match in the app is a guided one against a bot, step by step.

  1. Lay out your fleet. Place your ships on your own sea, or tap Shuffle for a new layout. Ships may not touch, not even at a corner. If time runs out, you start with the layout on your screen, with no penalty.

  2. Take turns firing. Pick a square on your opponent’s sea and fire. On that sea you only ever see what your own shots found.

  3. Miss, hit or sunk. A miss passes the turn. A hit lets you fire again. When every square of a ship has been hit, it sinks: the ship is revealed and the water around it is marked for you.

  4. Sink the whole fleet. The first player to sink every ship of the other fleet wins the battle. Then both fleets are shown.

  5. Win the match. A match is one battle, best of 3 or best of 5: the first to win 1, 2 or 3 battles takes it. Before each battle, both players lay out their fleets again.

Ways to play

  • Quick play. Meet real players on the 9×9 board. If nobody comes, a bot takes the seat, and it always says it is a bot.
  • A friend’s table. Set up a private table and invite a friend by code, QR code or a shared link. You choose the board (9×9 or 10×10), how many battles and the shot clock.
  • Practise with a bot. Easy or Normal, with no entry. Practice tables give no Akçe and never change your rating.
  • Tables. Sit down at an open table in the lobby, or watch a game being played. Spectators only see the shots, never a hidden ship.
  • League and friends. A weekly league and a season rating, a friends list and preset quick messages. There is no free chat.

Fair and calm

  • No real money

No real money can be won or lost. Akçe, the game’s currency, is only earned: by playing, from a daily gift and from optional rewarded ads. It cannot be bought, sent to another player or cashed out, and it has no cash value.

  • Nothing bought reaches the table

In the Bazaar you spend earned Akçe on ship hulls, seas and frames, which only change the look. The optional Amiral Club and the ad-free pack give no Akçe and no advantage.

  • Bots say they are bots

A bot is always labelled BOT next to its name and is never shown as a person. Matches with bots never change your rating.

  • Few ads, in set places

No ads during a match or when the app opens. One small banner only on the quick-play waiting screen, now and then an ad when you leave a finished table, and rewarded ads only when you choose to watch one. Club members and ad-free pack owners get no banner and no ads between matches.

  • No rush

If time runs out, your fleet starts as it stands or a shot is fired for you; after two timeouts in a row the autopilot plays until you take the helm back. You never lose a match because time ran out.

  • Easy to see

Miss, hit and sunk marks differ by shape, not only by colour, so they are colour-blind friendly. There is a one-handed layout, and motion can be reduced.
